Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Konstanz

Upon arrival in Konstanz, the starting point of your Lake Constance cycle tour, you’ll have the day to settle in and explore this charming city. Located at the western tip of the lake, Konstanz is a beautiful blend of medieval and modern architecture. The old town is full of cobbled streets, and highlights include the Imperia statue at the harbor, the historic Münster Cathedral, and the picturesque lakeside promenade. The city is a wonderful place to get acclimatized and soak up the atmosphere of a lakeside town before the cycling adventure begins. Spend your evening strolling by the lake or enjoying a meal in one of the lakeside restaurants.

Day 2: Konstanz - Überlingen

Distance: 48 kms (30 miles) / Elevation Gain: 466 m (1570 feet) / Saddle Time: 2.5-4.5 hours

On day two, the cycle journey begins with a ride to Uberlingen. The route offers a mix of lakeside paths and gentle hills, providing both scenic views and a relaxed ride. Along the way, you’ll stop at Mainau Island, famous for its botanical gardens. Here, you can explore the lush landscapes, vibrant flowers, and beautiful trees. The island also boasts panoramic views of Lake Constance, making it a perfect spot for a break before continuing the journey to Uberlingen. This picturesque town is known for its medieval buildings and lakeside charm, a fitting end to the day’s ride.

Day 3: Überlingen - Lindau

Distance: 56 kms (35 miles) / Elevation Gain: 105 m (354 feet) / Saddle Time: 3-5 hours

The third day of cycling takes you from Uberlingen to Lindau. This leg of the journey covers a variety of terrain, from flat lakeside roads to slightly more undulating paths. The ride offers stunning views of the lake on one side and the Alps on the other. Passing through charming villages, cyclists will have ample opportunity to stop and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside. Lindau itself is a highlight, a small town located on an island at the eastern end of Lake Constance. With its picturesque harbor, cobbled streets, and medieval buildings, Lindau is a captivating destination to explore.

Day 4: Lindau - Rorschach

Distance: 42 kms (26 miles) / Elevation Gain: 72 m (243 feet) / Saddle Time: 2-3.5 hours

Today’s cycling route takes you from Lindau to Rorschach, traveling through a mix of serene lakeside paths and quiet, rural areas. The terrain is generally easygoing, with some gentle ascents offering a variety of scenery throughout the ride. Highlights include passing through lovely towns such as Wasserburg and Arbon, each with its unique charm and lakeside views. Rorschach, a small Swiss town, offers both historical architecture and magnificent views of the lake. After the day’s ride, you’ll have time to explore its quaint streets and relax by the water’s edge, enjoying the Swiss ambiance.

Day 5: Rorschach - Konstanz

Distance: 37 kms (23 miles) / Elevation Gain: 104 m (350 feet) / Saddle Time: 2-3.5 hours

On day five, you cycle back to Konstanz, retracing part of the route from the previous days. The terrain is predominantly flat, making it a relaxed and pleasant ride. As you ride along the shores of Lake Constance, you’ll have opportunities to enjoy panoramic views and watch the changing light over the water. The route takes you through picturesque towns such as Kreuzlingen, where you’ll cross back into Germany. Once in Konstanz, you’ll have time to explore anything you missed on your first day in the city or simply relax by the lake, preparing for the final leg of the tour.

Day 6: Depart from Konstanz

On your final day, you’ll have the morning to further explore Konstanz before departing. You can visit any sites you missed on your first day, such as the Rosgartenmuseum or the Sea Life aquarium. The charming streets and lakeside paths offer the perfect setting for a peaceful walk or a relaxing coffee by the water, letting you take in the beauty of the area one last time. After a week of cycling and sightseeing, it’s time to say goodbye to Lake Constance and reflect on the unforgettable experience of this stunning tour.

Überlingen: Bürgerbräu Guesthouse

Located in the old town center of Überlingen, you will find the time out for you and your loved ones that you really deserve! Bürgerbräu is away from the hustle and bustle but still close enough to not miss anything: Lake Constance, the historic old town, the pedestrian zone and also the Bodenseetherme. Everything is within walking distance – or not, if you just want to be alone. Then the hinterland offers beautiful, quiet places in the middle of nature.

Lindau: Hotel Garni Brugger

Hotel Garni Brugger is part of the historical heart of the old Lindau island. It has been lovingly restored and offers you a beautiful home during your stay. What Is the cycle like?

This tour is in our Moderate difficulty grading. Consisting of a blend of cycle lanes, quiet country roads and forest trails. You’ll spend most of the ride following the banks of Lake Constance and passing through the surrounding towns. While the route overall is relatively flat, the opening day has some steeper ascent to tackle.

We offer hybrid & touring bikes for this route. If you are having doubts about your fitness levels, we also offer electric bikes on this tour.

Is this tour for me?

This Lake Constance tour strikes a perfect balance between covering decent distances, whilst having to stop and recharge. If you appreciate sparkling lake views, quant country villages, quality lunch breaks and plenty of time to explore the region’s rich history, this is the tour for you.

The Bikes

You have a choice of bringing your own bike or renting your tour bike through us during booking. For Lake Constance, the bikes available are quality electric or manual touring/hybrid bikes. If an electric bike is chosen, it will bring the daily saddle time down by approximately 1 hour.

We only partner with the best bike suppliers for all our destinations so you’ll be guaranteed well maintained, premium brand bikes such as Cube, Trek or KTM.

All bike rentals come with helmet, lock and repair kit. A network of mechanics are on call in case of any mechanical issues faced while on tour.

What Is The Climate Like?

We offer tours on Lake Constance from April – October. At the start of the tour season, the average temperatures in Konstanz are approximately 12 °C (54 °F). This is the quietest times of the season to miss queues at landmarks and also the driest time of the year. Temperatures peak at 26 °C (79 °F) in July & August. Temperatures as high as 35 °C (95 °F) have been recorded, but these are quite rare. Please see image below for reference.

Around Austria and Switzerland, you’ll encounter micro climates where the weather can suddenly shift due to the alpine peaks lining the lake. It is recommended to have emergency wet gear packed at all times while riding. Precipitation in this region is typically infrequent but heavy in nature.

Is The Tour Easy To Navigate?

We include detailed navigation instructions and GPX files for your ride. Our navigation app is easy to use and we give a detailed instructional video on how to use it. If you are having any difficulty, we are on call at all times to assist you.

There is frequent marked signage on the routes to keep you on course, as well as many fellow cyclists on the route to steer you in the right direction.
