Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Konstanz

Upon arrival in Konstanz, the starting point of your Lake Constance cycle tour, you’ll have the day to settle in and explore this charming city. Located at the western tip of the lake, Konstanz is a beautiful blend of medieval and modern architecture. The old town is full of cobbled streets, and highlights include the Imperia statue at the harbor, the historic Münster Cathedral, and the picturesque lakeside promenade. The city is a wonderful place to get acclimatized and soak up the atmosphere of a lakeside town before the cycling adventure begins. Spend your evening strolling by the lake or enjoying a meal in one of the lakeside restaurants.

Day 2: Konstanz - Überlingen

Distance: 18 kms (11 miles) / Elevation Gain: 154 m (519 feet) / Saddle Time: 1-2.5 hours

Your cycling journey begins with a scenic ride from Konstanz to Überlingen, passing through rolling hills and lakeside villages. En route, a visit to Mainau Island, also known as the “Flower Island,” is a must. You’ll pedal through lush landscapes, surrounded by the lake’s clear waters. After visiting Mainau, you’ll take a short ferry ride from Wallhausen to Überlingen, allowing you to enjoy the stunning views of the lake from the water. In Überlingen, you can explore the historic town center with its charming streets and lakeside promenade, where the relaxed atmosphere invites you to unwind after your first day on the bike.

Day 3: Überlingen - Friedrichshafen

Distance: 32 kms (20 miles) / Elevation Gain: 132 m (452 feet) / Saddle Time: 1.5-3 hours

From Überlingen, the cycle route takes you eastward toward Friedrichshafen. Along the way, the terrain is mostly flat, offering easy cycling and spectacular views of the lake and its surrounding hills. The route includes passing through peaceful forests and small towns with picturesque lakeside vistas. As you approach Friedrichshafen, known for its Zeppelin museum and historic connection to airship travel, you’ll have time to visit these attractions. The city’s long lakeside promenade is perfect for a relaxed evening walk, and you can enjoy dinner with a view of the lake.

Day 4: Friedrichshafen - Lindau

Distance: 25 kms (16 miles) / Elevation Gain: 74 m (249 feet) / Saddle Time: 1.5-3 hours

Today’s ride takes you to Lindau, a city set on a small island in the lake. The route from Friedrichshafen offers a pleasant mix of lakeside cycling and forested paths, with gentle undulations along the way. As you cycle through idyllic villages and farmland, the distant Alps start to come into view, adding to the spectacular backdrop. Upon arrival in Lindau, you can explore the historic island town, famous for its charming old town and lighthouse. The evening offers the opportunity to relax by the harbor and enjoy the serene views of the lake and the Alps in the distance.

Day 5: Lindau - Rorschach

Distance: 41 kms (25 miles) / Elevation Gain: 75 m (251 feet) / Saddle Time: 2-4 hours

The day’s ride takes you from Lindau across the border into Switzerland, toward Rorschach. The route features a mix of smooth lakeside paths and gentle climbs through scenic landscapes. Cycling through quaint Swiss villages, you’ll enjoy views of the majestic Alps across the lake. Rorschach, with its impressive lakeside location, offers a chance to enjoy the Swiss side of the lake. Here, you can visit the local museum or simply relax by the lake, taking in the beautiful surroundings. The highlight of this ride is the feeling of crossing international borders and experiencing the distinct cultures and landscapes of two countries.

Day 6: Rorschach - Konstanz

Distance: 37 kms (23 miles) / Elevation Gain: 104 m (350 feet) / Saddle Time: 2-3.5 hours

The return leg of your journey takes you back to Konstanz, cycling along the southern shore of Lake Constance. The terrain is varied, with a combination of lakefront paths and quiet country lanes. You’ll cycle through small towns and nature reserves, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the area. The route also offers some gentle climbs that provide panoramic views of the lake and the Alps. Upon arrival back in Konstanz, you’ll have time to relax and reflect on the journey. The evening is yours to enjoy the vibrant town, perhaps visiting the famous Imperia statue at sunset or enjoying a local meal.

Day 7: Loop Ride to Reichenau Island

Distance: 34 kms (21 miles) / Elevation Gain: 77 m (259 feet) / Saddle Time: 2-3 hours

For the last full day of cycling, a loop ride takes you to Reichenau Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its medieval churches and tranquil agricultural landscapes. Starting from Konstanz, you’ll cycle north to cross the bridge to the island, where you’ll ride through farmland and quaint villages. After exploring the island’s cultural and natural beauty, you’ll take a ferry south back to Konstanz, enjoying the views of the lake from the water. This loop ride offers a unique experience of both cycling and ferry travel, providing a relaxing and scenic way to end the tour.

Day 8: Depart from Konstanz

On your final day, you’ll have the morning to further explore Konstanz before departing. You can visit any sites you missed on your first day, such as the Rosgartenmuseum or the Sea Life aquarium. The charming streets and lakeside paths offer the perfect setting for a peaceful walk or a relaxing coffee by the water, letting you take in the beauty of the area one last time. After a week of cycling and sightseeing, it’s time to say goodbye to Lake Constance and reflect on the unforgettable experience of this stunning tour.

Überlingen: Bürgerbräu Guesthouse

Located in the old town center of Überlingen, you will find the time out for you and your loved ones that you really deserve! Bürgerbräu is away from the hustle and bustle but still close enough to not miss anything: Lake Constance, the historic old town, the pedestrian zone and also the Bodenseetherme. Everything is within walking distance – or not, if you just want to be alone. Then the hinterland offers beautiful, quiet places in the middle of nature.

Lindau: Hotel Garni Brugger

Hotel Garni Brugger is part of the historical heart of the old Lindau island. It has been lovingly restored and offers you a beautiful home during your stay. FAQ

What Is the cycle like?

This tour is in our Gentle difficulty grading. Consisting of a blend of cycle lanes, quiet country roads and forest trails. You’ll spend most of the ride following the banks of Lake Constance and passing through the surrounding towns. This means that the route is largely flat with only a handful of brief ascents to overcome.

We offer hybrid bikes, kids bikes and kids trailers for this route. If you are having doubts about your fitness levels, we also offer electric bikes on this tour.

Is this tour for me?

This Lake Constance tour puts leisure and the slow life above all else. If you appreciate sparkling lake views, quant country villages, long lunch breaks and plenty of time to explore the region’s rich history, this is the tour for you.

It is a perfect route for families and less confident cyclists, with largely segregated bike paths with some occasional low speed country roads. The route attracts large amounts of cyclists from all over the world, giving the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow riders too.

The Bikes

You have a choice of bringing your own bike or renting your tour bike through us during booking. For Lake Constance, the bikes available are quality electric or manual touring bikes. If an electric bike is chosen, it will bring the daily saddle time down by approximately 1 hour.

We only partner with the best bike suppliers for all our destinations so you’ll be guaranteed well maintained, premium brand bikes such as Cube, Trek or KTM.

All bike rentals come with helmet, lock and repair kit. A network of mechanics are on call in case of any mechanical issues faced while on tour.

What Is The Climate Like?

We offer tours on Lake Constance from April – October. At the start of the tour season, the average temperatures in Konstanz are approximately 12 °C (54 °F). This is the quietest times of the season to miss queues at landmarks and also the driest time of the year. Temperatures peak at 26 °C (79 °F) in July & August. Temperatures as high as 35 °C (95 °F) have been recorded, but these are quite rare. Please see image below for reference.

Around Austria and Switzerland, you’ll encounter micro climates where the weather can suddenly shift due to the alpine peaks lining the lake. It is recommended to have emergency wet gear packed at all times while riding. Precipitation in this region is typically infrequent but heavy in nature.

Is The Tour Easy To Navigate?

We include detailed navigation instructions and GPX files for your ride. Our navigation app is easy to use and we give a detailed instructional video on how to use it. If you are having any difficulty, we are on call at all times to assist you.

There is frequent marked signage on the routes to keep you on course, as well as many fellow cyclists on the route to steer you in the right direction.

What If There Is An Issue On Tour?

Included in your tour, is 24/7 message and video support. If you have an issue with navigation, bike breakdown, accommodation, medical, etc, we are at the touch of a button away at all times.
