Welcome to Fort William, your gateway to adventure. Nestled at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak, this charming town invites you to explore the Great Glen and beyond. Prepare for your journey with a visit to the local shops or stock up on essentials at the large supermarket. If you’re craving a hearty meal, Fort William offers a delightful array of restaurants to satisfy your appetite. Before settling in for the evening, don’t forget to pick up your bike—it’s the key to tomorrow’s stunning ride. Rest well, and get ready to embrace the beauty of the journey ahead.
Distance: 44 kms (27 miles) / Elevation Gain: 345 m (1160 feet) / Saddle Time: 3-5 hours
Your journey begins with a gentle, flat ride—perfect for easing into the adventure ahead. Leaving Fort William and Inverlochy behind, you’ll head northeast, your front wheel aimed at the promise of discovery. Pause to admire the engineering marvel of Neptune’s Staircase before gliding along peaceful canal-side gravel paths. Ancient forests and breathtaking views over Loch Lochy accompany your ride, offering serene spots for a midday rest. As you skirt the final hillside, a satisfying descent brings you to Invergarry, your haven for the night. Reward yourself with a hearty meal and a well-deserved rest.
Distance: 48 kms (30 miles) / Elevation Gain: 798 m (2690 feet) / Saddle Time: 4-6 hours
Today’s journey is challenging but deeply rewarding. A short ride along the A82 leads you back into serene woods and along the hillside above Loch Oich. Descend to the water’s edge and follow the Caledonian Canal to Fort Augustus, where the shores of Loch Ness await. Take a break, explore the town, and enjoy a bite to eat.
Undulating forest roads guide you to Invermoriston, a perfect spot to rest and admire the falls or visit the nearby stone circle.
Next, a big climb prepares you for a choice: the High or Low route. On a bike, the Low route is your best option, saving the high path for hikers. The day’s steepest climbs come late, so pace yourself and take breaks as needed.
A final stretch through woodlands brings you to Drumnadrochit, where you can relax and reflect on your day’s achievements in this charming village.
Distance: 36 kms (23 miles) / Elevation Gain: 493 m (1660 feet) / Saddle Time: 3-5 hours
Prepare for a thrilling day of contrasts! The first half of your ride presents challenging climbs that test your resolve, but what goes up must come down, rewarding you with exhilarating descents. If the technical sections push your limits, don’t hesitate to walk your bike—you’ll soon be greeted by a well-earned pause with cake, tea, and coffee at the route’s most demanding point.
Take a moment to visit the charming outdoor café at the Abrachian Forest campsite—you won’t regret it. The second half of your journey is a cyclist’s dream, with sweeping downhill stretches leading you to the Highland capital. As you glide into Inverness, the iconic castle serves as a majestic finale to your ride. Spend the evening soaking in the city’s beauty before preparing to head back in the opposite direction.
Distance: 55 kms (34 miles) / Elevation Gain: 512 m (1725 feet) / Saddle Time: 4.5-6.5 hours
Day four takes you along the serene southern side of Loch Ness, following the South Loch Ness Trail and Route 78 of the UK’s National Cycle Network. Take a moment to soak in the breathtaking views across the water, where the hills you’ve conquered stand tall.
The bustle of the city fades quickly as you glide along smooth road surfaces, making the miles effortless. Watch for playful squirrels darting across your path—this side of the loch teems with wildlife. The trail’s beauty is captivating, offering a fresh perspective distinct from the northern routes.
After leaving Foyers, the steady climb to the day’s highest point tests your resolve, but the reward is unforgettable. Brace yourself for a thrilling descent into Fort Augustus, where you’ll end the day on a cyclist’s high, exhilarated by the ride and the stunning scenery.
Distance: 57 kms (35 miles) / Elevation Gain: 382 m (1285 feet) / Saddle Time: 4-6 hours
It’s your final day, and the journey eases as you return to Fort William. The gentle canal-side paths greet you once more, now with views that were once behind you, offering a fresh perspective and a sense of fond familiarity. Each turn reminds you of the extraordinary feat you’ve accomplished—crossing a country twice in one epic ride. As you roll back into Fort William, you carry not just memories, but a deep and personal connection to one of Europe’s most breathtaking landscapes.
With the might of Ben Nevis in your wake, you’ll feel like you can conquer anything. Having just completed over 240 kms (149 miles) of some of Europe’s toughest terrain, you’ve earned yourself a celebratory Scotch to mull over, planning your next bike tour challenge.

This tour was an excellent way to explore Scotland’s Highlands, with highlights like Urquhart, Fort Augustus, and the serene Loch Ness. The bikes were comfortable and well-maintained, and the accommodations were generally good. My only gripe was that some routes felt a little too ambitious our skill level—I wish there had been more information about the difficulty upfront and we would have booked e-bikes instead. Tom was helpful in suggesting ways to pace ourselves, but we still felt a bit overwhelmed at times. Despite a few difficulties, we came away with amazing memories and a deep appreciation for Scotland’s wild beauty.
